CONTRACTORS INSURANCE

The typical insurance protection that a small contractor would purchase is outlined below. Depending on the contractor's operations, some or all of these coverages should be considered:

General Liability:

Protects the contractor for injuries to people and property damage while on the job site or after the job is completed.

Example: a tool accidentally hits someone on the head while a carpenter is
installing a shelf. The carpenter would be protected if the injured
person sues.

Example: a tool accidentally falls onto a glass table while a carpenter is installing
a shelf. The carpenter would be protected if the owner of the table sues.

Example: The shelf that a carpenter installed comes loose 6 months after the job
is completed (also called completed operations) and hits someone on
the head. The carpenter would be protected if the injured person sues.

Property Insurance:

Protects the contractor against loss to their own property including office equipment, tools and mobile equipment.

An installation floater provides coverage for the contractor on equipment and materials that the contractor is installing at a job site.

Automobile Insurance:

Insurance Coverage for your commercial vehicles as well as private passenger
autos that are registered in the business name.

Hired and Non-owned Auto coverage should be purchased under the auto policy
whenever possible. This protects the contractor when the contractor's employee
is involved in an auto accident while performing duties for the contractor.

Workers Compensation Insurance:

Usually required if you have employees. This provides coverage for the
contractor's employees if they get injured on the job.

Disability Insurance

Some states require you to provide Disability coverage (also known as dbl) to cover your employees if they become sick or injured off the job.
